Fragrance History and Trends
The fragrance industry over thousands of years has been driven by a mixture of biological responses, perceived psychological needs and memory.  In Egyptian times, rich oils and unguents were used for burial and religious purposes. It was believed that the scented materials transported the deceased to their next lifetime. In the Middle Ages, various fragrant substances were functionally used to mask body scent as washing regularly was not available. From the 16th to 19th centuries, perfumes were used exclusively by the wealthy and France became the world center of perfumery.  Synthetics fragrance notes were first developed in the late 1800's. When this occurred, perfumes were no longer limited to the rich.  With the dawning of scientific methods of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry in the 20th century, long-guarded fragrance formulas could not be kept secret and plethora of mass-produced scents and their "rip-offs" were designed. As our society became more technologically advanced, we moved from the beauty of the rare scent to a world of mass production, alcohol-based and watered-down perfumes and colognes. Currently, every one is creating a scent today such as the huge celebrity-produced fragrance market.

In the early 90's, I was residing in Denver, Colorado and I was fortunate to attend a work shop given by John Steele, a brilliant and world-respected authority in aromatherapy.  Already a custom perfumer at the time, I was deeply impressed when Mr. Steele predicted accurately that we were progressing into what he called an "Olfactory Renaissance".  We were moving forward into an age when people were returning to the purposeful origins of scents and essential oils....to heal, to arouse consciousness, to center, and to become individual.  Customized scents are now coming full circle once again and people are beginning to see the importance and value of not being one of the masses. Custom fragrances create one's "personal atmosphere" of individuality, confidence and purpose.  I am proud to announce that 2008 marks my 17th year in providing custom fragrance services. Without being aware it at the time, Esens Custom Fragrances was already part of the newest trend in the fragrance industry.
